There are many things that I am passionate about, and many of them find their way into my writing. The ones I describe here are glimpses into my interests to let you get to know me better. They give you a glimpse into how my real life helps to shape my stories. Hopefully, my love of these things shines through.
My love of the ocean combines with my love of adventure in those seafaring gentlemen (and women) of fortune. I enjoy both historical and fictional pirates, and I have been known to dress up as a pirate myself from time to time. Pirates will be in one of my stories in the collection Wyld Magic in a Flash, coming December 2013, and in probably many more stories to come.
Playing at least two musical instruments and being able to sing were requirements for my family when I was growing up. I play the piano and am learning guitar, I played percussion in marching band, I trained in singing for musical theater and I learned various forms of dance. Today, saying that my music collection is “eclectic” is an understatement, drawing on a mixture of genres, countries, and time periods. Examples of music in my stories include the school orchestra in Small Town Witch, and the folk songs and prayers I wrote for A Flight of Marewings.
My creative side also comes out while working with my hands. I’ve been known to crochet amigurumi toys, make my own jewelry, sew costumes, and various other crafts as the fancy takes me. Sometimes I may showcase one of my more successful projects.
I will freely admit that I’m a radical feminist who fights for women’s, POC, and LGBT rights. Although I never want to be preachy in my stories, I do want to change the world for the better, and these attitudes will come through subtly in my writing. You can see more of my political writings on my tumblr.
